Even in Cambridge

Evicted in Cambridge

Don’t be intimidated by the length of this 2017 Pulitzer Prize winner for nonfiction.  Despite details that sat on my soul with deepening sadness, I found this readable and compelling.  If you are short on time consider just reading the epilogue and “about this book” sections at the back.  Then consider how you might act in your community to support efforts for affordable housing.

Implicit Bias in Cambridge

The Civic Unity Committee of the Mayor’s Office recently sponsored a talk entitled
Implicit Bias, given by Professor Mahzarin Banaji, Chair of the Department of Psychology at Harvard.  Ask yourself Banaji’s question: “Are our values inconsistent with our behavior?” Then read more to find out how to give yourself a check up.

What are you doing now?

Over the past few years I have watched with curiosity and jealousy as stay at home moms took their youngest children to school for the first time.  In September I finally got to experience the transition myself.  (You can take a moment to celebrate with me here.)

Sing, Unburied, Sing

This 2017 National Book Award winner for fiction takes us to the deep south where we encounter characters enduring with the new Jim Crow, drug addiction and the effects of incarceration as they deal with the trauma from Hurricane Katrina, Deepwater Horizon and personal battles that ravage their lives.  Pick up a copy and challenge yourself to understand how such a culture is still alive and full of struggle even today.
