We Were the Lucky Ones
by Georgia Hunter

Hunter's gripping story of her own family’s survival of the Holocaust is punctuated by global perspective and striking statistics to illustrate how family members escape the odds.  After reading it, I found myself all the more aware of the void of similar statistics for atrocities mentioned in Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime.  Read both and test your knowledge of 20th century history!

Renewing commitments

Early in the new year, I felt myself grow a little weary.  While I was tempted to put some down, I am going to keep the commitments to volunteer work that I signed up for in the fall, recognizing winter as a season to endure with patience and a reminder to call out to God for strength when I feel like I can’t do it on my own.

Born a Crime
by Trevor Noah

While perhaps not the comedy we were expecting from The Daily Show's host, our book club
found this collection of stories surprisingly light and compelling given the challenging topic of apartheid.  We learned a lot about South Africa, and we were relieved to read a description of a beautiful parent-child relationship!  We recommend this book if you haven't gotten to it yet.

On becoming an arrow

Interestingly, Scott Kelly’s account of his record-setting year on the International Space Station demonstrates the importance of the lessons we learned at Tigers Christian Club this month --  on becoming a peacemaker and cultivating a servant’s heart.  A beautiful example of how Biblical truths are relevant in our secular world, read on and consider where the arrow of your heart will take you.

Back when they called it Zaire

When I was in elementary school, I learned of the church’s involvement in Zaire.  Recently, my husband and I began sponsoring a child in the Democratic Republic of the Congo through World Vision, and I can now say that I am finally part of a global effort that I first heard of thirty years ago.
